Essence: Solange

Solange is definitely one of our generations fashions icons.  Her styling choices are innovative, fun, and always eye-catching.  Solange recently covered Essence magazine and opened up about motherhood. Solange's cover will be released in May.

On "style icon": "A lot of times I don't feel very deserving of that title, because it is such a rotation of inspiration that I get from…so many people. I interpret my style the best way I can, and I feel so appreciative that it's celebrated on that level."

Check out some behind the scenes from the shoot.

Nick Cannon.

What's going on with Nick Cannon? Nick Cannon has been turning heads for the last few weeks. He has caused plenty of controversy with his white face, his crazy interviews and his wacky outfits.  I wonder what Mr. Cannon has up his sleeve because, he has truly been making all headlines.  Check out his recent outfit choice with his interview on Good Morning America.

Love of Prints!

Prints and more prints.  Spring is here and it is time for bright and bold colors as well as some fun funky prints.  I love prints, polka dots, tribal, floral, animal, horizontal, vertical, and so many more.  Patterns can be used in casual, formal, semi-formal, and basically any kind of occasion. Here are some different ways to incorporate it into your style.

Even the babies can rock prints!

Swimwear!

Runway addition.

I adore this look, mixing up with African prints.

You can even prints to your job and still keep it professional.

SXSW 2014.

YESSSSS, I was back at it this year again. SOUTHBYSOUTHWEST! I loved it, Austin is such an amazing city and has so much life there.  Everyone was in the city from March 6-15 for the big music fest.  A little background on South By South West;  It is a festival that showcases both films and music.  The first few days of the festival tend to be about the premiere of the films and as the days goes on it becomes more about the people.  The festival was much more commercialized this year.  It was packed with people and people and more people.  The media took over and seemed to overshadow the point of the fest. The point of the festival is to showcase upcoming artists from all genres and different places in the world.  However, this year Doritos, Monster, Spotify, Pandora, and several corporations completely took and put the festival on a pedistul and commercialized it. It was so ridiculous and almost scary. Their were three victims that were killed and I am praying for their families. Safety is very important for SXSW. I had the opportunity to see A$AP Mob, Future, BOB, Nas, Rich Homie Quan, Problem, and several other artists.  You all know I am a hip-hop head. A$AP Mob evokes a crazy energy from the crowd and it is completely better than anything you have ever experienced. Although, I enjoyed everything I can not say I am attending the festival next year.  I am used to the genuine aspect of the festival, where the fans connect with the artists.  Many fan bases are built there but, this year was so much BIGGER, AND BRIGHTER. It's crazy to see how much SXSW changed within a year.  Here are some of my favorite moments.

Chris Brown.

WOW! It has recently reported that Chris Brown will be serving a month in jail since he was booted out of REHAB! I honestly feel sympathy for Chris, it is as if he can not get a break.  It is just sad to see how his career in unfortunately taking a turn for the worst.  There are so many rumors and alleged reports.  Although, we must all be accountable for our actions.  Chris Brown is a leader, someone who the youth looks up to and it would not be fair if he was not penalized for his actions.  I am wishing the best for him and hope he keeps his head held high. (I hope his friend Justin Bieber is taking notice).  I am hoping the best for Chris and hope he gets out soon.  As the old saying goes. "don't do the crime, if you can't do the time"  Chris Brown is a man and should understand that he has to be responsible because, all eyes are on HIM!

(Chris Brown is looking much healthier, tho)

Black History!

As an African American I have always studied my history.  I have studied the oppression of blacks all the way to excitement of the days where African Americans have surpassed all odds. There is no way to describe the emotion of being an African American and existing in today's society. When you look at people such as Dr. Martin L. King, Thurgood Marshall III, Malcom X, Harriet Tubman, and Rosa Parks they have gave so many blacks hope.  When you look at today's African Americans and what we have accomplished it is become of the persistence of many leaders that led is to equality and freedom.  It almost seems unreal that African Americans were shipped from Africa and forced into slavery.  Barely 160 years ago, that I would have been regarded as nothing more than property and referred to as a "nigger" brings chills to my body.  I am forever grateful and never will forget what so many have done for me.  I know because of them I have gotten the chance to see legacies of  President Barack Obama, Michael Jackson, Oprah, Tyler Perry, Beyonce, Sidney Poitier, Maya Angelou, and so many more that have done the impossible.

Grammy Thoughts.

After the unfortunate snub that so many of our black artists take every year at the prestigious Grammys. So, many black artists go on accredited for their amazing creativity and hard work. It almost is inevitable that this will happen to several black artists every year.  I am not at all trying to pull the race card but, I think it is truly said that so many of our artists are walked over for the Grammys.  POLITICALLY, I assume record sells qualify your acceptance as an artists. I think this argument is completely unfair.  Underground artists today are becoming more and more popular and the typical radio plays and number singles are getting accounted for less and less. There are so many successful artists who can sell out a venue without having to really be on the radio.  Artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and J. Cole have proved it.  They released MORE free music than they have singles and albums.  Artists today are realizing that the power is in the people and not with the execs. I think that is important to remember, the people have the power.  That is why I think the Grammys is becoming less accountable for the real rewarding of music.  The Grammys has been ruled as a POPULARITY contests.

SPEAK ON IT!

Sasha Menu Courey

This weekend on a visit home, my mom happen to tell me about an amazing story.  The story is about a young lady names Sasha Menu Courey, who a Missouri University swimmer. As a college sometimes we tend to be carefree and forget the importance of being okay. As a young adult we struggle a lot with excepting our imperfections and being okay with our circumstances. The video of her story is below.
